Fluidfem

Fluid, but every stop keeps a feminine cast: girl, demigirl, a soft boy, something xenic — always with the femininity intact.

Overview

What fluidfem means.

Genderfluid says the gender moves. Fluidfem adds one fixed thing: wherever it goes, it stays feminine. Mostly the movement runs between female and feminine genders — woman, demigirl, feminine non-binary. Occasionally it lands somewhere else: a masculine gender, a neutral one, something xenic. But even those visits keep a feminine thread, and the record on the LGBTQIA+ Wiki says the femininity itself holds at roughly the same strength throughout.

So the picture is a range with a colour wash over it. A fluidfem person might be a woman on Monday, a girl-leaning androgyne by Thursday, a boy with a feminine cast at the weekend — and the feminine part is the one thing that did not change.

It is a very new and very small word. The record credits it to a Discord user in June 2022, flags included, along with a set of sub-labels — fluidfemflux, parafluidfem, demifluidfem — that nobody is obliged to use. There is no history beyond that, no research, no count. It is also not fluidmasc, which is the same shape with a masculine wash, and not girlfluid, where girl is usually read as the base you return to rather than the tint on every stop.

A fluid gender whose every stop keeps a feminine cast.

Fluidfem in one line

Origin

Where the word comes from

The LGBTQIA+ Wiki dates fluidfem's coining to June 2022, without naming an individual coiner; it belongs to a later, more systematised generation of MOGAI-adjacent gender-modifier terms (alongside fluidmasc) built to describe genderfluidity that stays within one broad lane — here, feminine-coded genders — rather than crossing into masculine or fully unrelated territory.

The word combines "fluid" (from genderfluid) with "-fem" to mark that every stop the gender makes, whether girl, demigirl, a feminine-leaning boy or a xenogender, keeps a feminine cast. Sub-labels such as fluidfemflux (or fluixfem), parafluidfem and demifluidfem later extended the term to describe variations in intensity or degree.

Signs people describe

Common experiences

None of these is a test. Most people recognise a few and shrug at the rest.

01

You have stopped being a woman for a few days and were still, unmistakably, feminine while it lasted.

02

When a boyish stretch arrives it is a soft one — a boy in a way your girl friends would recognise.

03

Genderfluid felt right about the movement and wrong about the map.

Your map has a tint.

04

You have never once landed somewhere that felt masculine all the way through.

05

Your wardrobe changes less than you would expect for someone whose gender moves. The feminine pieces do double duty.

06

Being called she has been wrong about the noun and right about the adjective.

Pronouns

Pronouns

She/her is common and survives most of the movement, because the feminine part never leaves. Some run she/they. Some switch on the days a different gender visits. Pick what costs least; a fixed set that is right about the adjective and occasionally wrong about the noun is not a lie.

Consider another path

This might not be your word if…

  • 1Some of your stops are masculine through and through. That is plain genderfluid, and there is nothing lesser about it.
  • 2It does not move. You are a feminine non-binary person, or a demigirl, all year. Take the steadier word.
  • 3What moves is how feminine you feel, not which gender. The record's own sub-label fluidfemflux covers that, and genderflux is the wider, better-known word.
  • 4You are a woman whose style swings between dresses and boilersuits. Presentation moving is not gender moving.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fluidfem and girlfluid?+

Fluidfem is defined by what stays: a feminine cast on every gender you pass through, including the ones that are not girl. Girlfluid is usually read as being defined by where you return: girl as the base. You could be both. If your non-girl stops are not feminine at all, girlfluid or genderfluid fits better.

Is fluidfem a real term?+

It is a real term with a very short paper trail. The wiki record credits it to a Discord user in June 2022, flags and sub-labels included, and that is the whole documented history. That does not make the experience new. It does mean almost nobody you meet will know the word.

Do I need to use the sub-labels?+

No. The record says so itself: someone can just say fluidfem while their actual pattern matches fluidfemflux, parafluidfem or demifluidfem. The sub-labels are there if precision helps you. For most people the plain word is enough.
