What femme nonbinary means.
Femme nonbinary is two words doing two jobs. Non-binary says you are not a man and not a woman. Femme says the shape your gender takes is feminine — worked at, chosen, yours. Put together: femininity without womanhood.
It is not a contradiction, though people will tell you it is. Non-binary does not mean androgynous, and it never did. Plenty of non-binary people are recognisably feminine and never once feel like women. The feminine thing is not a leftover from being assigned female, or a performance for being assigned male. It is the gender.
Two notes on the word femme. In lesbian and queer culture it has a long history — Wikipedia's article on femme traces it to mid-century lesbian bar life, and records that it has since been used for gender-nonconforming, transgender and non-binary people too. Some sapphic femmes hold that the word is theirs and not open to everyone; you will meet that position and it is not a fringe one. Some non-binary people say "feminine non-binary" or "femme-leaning enby" to sidestep it. All of that is live, and none of it is settled here.

Where the word comes from
"Femme" itself has a documented history: it developed within lesbian butch/femme culture, particularly in North American working-class lesbian bar culture from the mid-20th century onward, as a name for a partner who leaned into feminine self-presentation. Wikipedia records that usage of "femme" later broadened well beyond lesbian butch/femme pairings to describe gender-nonconforming, transgender and non-binary people whose gender expression is feminine.
"Femme nonbinary" as a specific combined term has no dedicated community-wiki entry and no individual coiner on record; it appears to have arisen through ordinary compounding, as non-binary people who are femme-presenting or femme-identified adopted "femme" from that older lesbian and queer usage to describe a feminine gender held without claiming womanhood.

You look feminine, you like looking feminine, and "woman" still lands like the wrong name called across a shop.
People assume the non-binary part is a phase because the lipstick is real. You have stopped explaining that both are.

They/them, she/they, she/her — all common, and none of them makes you a woman. Some use he/him and are femme without contradiction. Some switch by room. The pronoun follows you, not the word.

Can you be non-binary and feminine?+
Yes. Non-binary means not a man and not a woman. It has never required androgyny, short hair or a binder. A feminine non-binary person is exactly as non-binary as anyone else under the umbrella, and the people who say otherwise are describing their own expectations.
Is femme nonbinary the same as being a demigirl?+
No. Demigirl is a fraction — partly a woman. Femme nonbinary is a texture — feminine, and not a woman at all. Some people hold both. Most hold one.
Do I have the right to the word femme?+
Contested, honestly. It came out of lesbian bar culture, and some sapphic femmes hold that it stays there. Others say any queer person may use it, and Wikipedia records the word being used for non-binary and trans people. If the argument bothers you, "feminine non-binary" says the same thing and nobody objects to it.
