Femme is femininity claimed on your own terms rather than performed for someone watching — a word with real history in lesbian bar culture, and for many people now, a gender in itself. It does not say what else you are. A femme can be a woman, a man, non-binary, or none of those, and the word femme alone does not resolve the question.
Femme nonbinary answers it. It takes the same worked-at, chosen femininity and pairs it with a direct statement: not a man, not a woman. The femininity is not a leftover from being assigned female, and it is not borrowed womanhood. It is simply what the gender looks like, with non-binary doing the work of ruling both binary options out.
How to tell them apart
- Ask whether "woman" is off the table on purpose. If yes, and the femininity stays, that is femme nonbinary. If the question hasn't been settled, femme alone might be all you need for now.
- Femme nonbinary is a claim about identity; plain femme can be a claim about aesthetics, community, or history without settling identity at all.
- If someone calls you a woman and it lands wrong even though you're clearly feminine, that's the non-binary part doing its job. Femme alone doesn't carry that correction.

Non-binary means androgynous, so femme nonbinary is a contradiction.

- No. Femme fits under woman just as easily as under non-binary. If you started as femme nonbinary and later find woman fits, femme carries over without any contradiction.
- Is femme nonbinary the same as demigirl?
- Not necessarily. Demigirl usually means partly a woman. Femme nonbinary can mean not a woman at all, just feminine. Some people's experience overlaps both, but the words aren't interchangeable.
