Overview
What demiboy means.
Demiboy describes a gender that is partly a man and partly not. Both parts stay put. Neither one is in the process of beating the other.
The rest might be agender, nothing there at all. It might be nonbinary and unnamed, or a bit of womanhood, or a blank nobody has ever needed to fill in. The word names the fraction of manhood, not the remainder.
It is not a score for masculinity. Plenty of demiboys are broad, bearded and loud. It is also not a status you qualify for: any age, either birth assignment, out to nobody, nowhere near a doctor, living somewhere none of this is safe to say aloud. Try the word on. Put it down if it does not fit.
A partial but not complete connection to manhood or masculinity. The other part may be any other gender or agender.
Demiboy in one line
Origin
Where the word comes from
Demiboy is part of the demigender family of identities, which describe a partial connection to a given gender — here, a partial but incomplete connection to being male, alongside another gender, genders, or no further gender at all. The demi- prefix follows the pattern set by "demisexual," a term coined within the AVEN (Asexual Visibility and Education Network) community in the mid-2000s for someone who only experiences sexual attraction after forming an emotional bond.
Demigender itself is usually traced to nonbinary and genderqueer online communities around 2010-2011, and demiboy followed as one of its two main branches (alongside demigirl). No single coiner or exact date is documented for demiboy specifically; it developed through community usage on Tumblr and similar spaces rather than one identifiable coining post.

Common experiences
None of these is a test. Most people recognise a few and shrug at the rest.
You might be perfectly fine with he/him and still hear a wrong note when someone says he is a good man about you.
You might have written male on a form, meant it, and still felt like you had rounded up.
You might have picked up nonbinary and put it back down, because it did not account for the part of you that genuinely is a bit of a bloke.
You might get called sir by a stranger and feel about seventy per cent addressed.
You might have been asked what percentage you are and had nothing to say, because it is not a dial you can read.
You might feel no urge at all to correct strangers, and a sharp urge to correct the three people who actually know you.
You might have assumed for years that everyone experiences manhood as a partial thing and simply does not mention it.
You might notice it most in small print: forms, group emails opening with gentlemen, the wording inside birthday cards.

Day to day
What it looks like on a normal Tuesday
Most days nothing happens. That is the honest version. You get up, you go to work, nobody asks you a single thing about gender and you do not think about it either.
Then something small snags. A form with two boxes. Someone in a shop calling you my man in a way that is friendly and almost right.
Almost right is the whole texture of it. Not wrong enough to correct. Not right enough to have forgotten by lunchtime.
There is a calculation each time. Is this worth a sentence. Usually it is not, it costs four seconds, and you carry on with your day.
Four seconds, ten times a week, for years. That is what people mean when they say this is tiring. Not one big wound. A lot of very small ones that heal fine and keep opening in the same place.

What people get wrong
It is a stepping stone. You will end up a man eventually.
Some people do move on from it. Plenty do not, and nobody has counted either way. A word that describes where you are now does not owe anyone a destination, and nobody asks cis men when they plan to finish.
You are just a man who is not very masculine.
Masculinity is style. Manhood is a claim. Someone can be enormously masculine and still only partly a man, and a delicate cis bloke can be fully one. Different questions.
You cannot be a demiboy if you were assigned male at birth.
You can, and that version gets dismissed the most, sometimes by other trans people. Plenty of them state it as a definition. It is an opinion. Being raised as a boy does not mean the word man ever fully landed.
Demi means half, so you are exactly fifty per cent.
The prefix does mean half, from French. In gender words it gets used for partial, and partial is what people mean by it: eighty twenty, or a fraction that shifts a couple of points and settles. Nobody is measuring, including you.
It is a made-up internet word.
It is recent and it did come out of online communities. So did most of the vocabulary anyone uses for this, and man was made up by somebody too. The question is whether it describes you accurately at 4pm on a Tuesday.
It is related to demisexual, so it is about attraction.
Same prefix, nothing else in common. One is about gender, one is about attraction. You can be either, both or neither.
Take care
On the hard days
The worst days are not usually the ones with a hostile stranger in them. They are the ones where your own side waves you off.
Assigned male at birth, some people will hear demiboy and file you as a cis man collecting labels. Assigned female, some will hear a trans man who has not committed yet. Both readings are wrong. Both are common.
There is grief in it too, of an unglamorous kind. Watching someone tick one box on a form without thinking, and wanting that simplicity more than you expected to.
Then there is the 2am version. The suspicion that you invented all of this. That you read a word online, liked the shape of it, and have been performing it since.
The honest answer is that you cannot prove otherwise. Nobody can prove their gender, least of all the people demanding proof of yours.
The only real test is time. Use the word quietly for a few months and watch what it does to your ordinary days.
If it makes small things easier, stays accurate when you are exhausted, and does not need constant defending inside your own head, it is working. If it goes stiff, put it down and pick up a different one.
These words are equipment, not a verdict.

Pronouns
Pronouns
He/him is common. So is he/they. Plenty of demiboys use they/them only, some use it/its or neopronouns, and a fair number answer to more than one. Nobody has actually counted, so treat any claim about the most popular set, including this one, as a guess.
No pronoun proves the word fits and none rules it out. Using different pronouns in different rooms is normal. That is logistics, not indecision.
Consider another path
This might not be your word if…
- 1The word man fits you completely and your real complaint is with what men are supposed to be like. Hating the rules is not the same as sitting partly outside the category, and cis men are allowed to loathe the rules and stay men.
- 2It moves. Whole man some weeks, nothing like one on others. That points at genderfluid or genderflux, a changing amount rather than a fixed fraction.
- 3You went looking for the boy part honestly and found nothing there. Or the word is mainly there to explain your haircut to colleagues, in which case it is doing public relations rather than describing you. Agender or plain nonbinary may be the more accurate fit.
- 4Man fits, and you are hesitating only because you have not started anything yet or think you have not earned it. Demi used as a modesty word will chafe within a year. Not feeling far enough along is not the same as being partial.
Questions people ask
Frequently asked questions
Am I a demiboy or a trans man?+
Ask what happens to the word man when everything else goes right. Imagine the transition you would want, the name, the people, all of it sorted. Now say I am a man out loud. If it lands cleanly, trans man is the likelier fit and the hesitation is probably fear rather than fraction. If it still leaves a gap, if some part of you stands slightly to one side of it, that gap is what demiboy names. You are also allowed to use trans man for now and change later. Plenty of people do it in that order.
Can you be a demiboy if you were assigned male at birth?+
Yes. It is the version people dismiss fastest and it is entirely ordinary. Being raised as a boy does not mean the word man ever fully settled on you. Some people spend thirty years assuming everyone finds it a partial fit and simply gets on with it. You do not need dysphoria, a new name or a change of pronouns to qualify. If some of manhood is yours and some of it is not, that is the whole criterion.
Can demiboys take hormones or have surgery?+
Yes, where they are available and if you want them. Nothing about being partial requires you to want a partial body, and nothing stops you wanting one either. Some take a full dose of testosterone, some a low dose on purpose. Worth knowing before you ask: a low dose often changes how fast the changes arrive more than where they end up, so ask the prescriber what it will and will not limit. Some want top surgery and nothing else. Some want none of it, ever. The friction usually comes from being asked to justify wanting less than the standard package. Decide what you want before the appointment, write it down in plain words, and do not let anyone talk you into extras to prove you are serious.
How do I explain this without a twenty-minute conversation?+
Keep one short sentence in your pocket. I am partly a man and partly not. He and they are both fine. That covers nearly everything. If they push, one more line will do it. It is not a phase and it is not half of anything, it is just where I sit. You do not have to teach anyone the terminology. Most people do not need the word demiboy at all. They only need to know what to call you and that you are not upset with them.
The flag
Designed in 2015 by Salem Fontana, on the Tumblr account "transrants", alongside the companion demigirl flag; seven mirrored stripes where grey signals a partial connection to gender, blue manhood/masculinity, and white agender or non-binary identity. Hex values are near-universally cited as #7F7F7F / #C4C4C4 / #FFFFFF, with the blue appearing as #9AD9EB in most references (#9DD7EA in a minority).
