Non-binary is the umbrella most demiboys sit under. It says the two big words do not cover you. Demiboy is more specific: a real fraction of manhood, holding steady, with a remainder that is agender, unnamed, or a bit of something else. The word names the fraction, not the remainder.
Not everyone agrees on the filing. Some demiboys count themselves non-binary and trans. Some think of themselves as men with a caveat and claim neither. That disagreement is real rather than a misunderstanding, and the word you use in public may not be the word you use in your head.
How to tell them apart
- Say "about seventy per cent a man" out loud. If it lands, the shape is demiboy. If no number is right because the pull is not towards man at all, the umbrella fits without the specific.
- Check the form. Writing "male", meaning it, and still feeling you rounded up is the demiboy tell. Ticking man or woman the way you would give the nearest big town instead of your address is the non-binary one.
- Ask what non-binary left out. Demiboys often picked the word up and put it back down because it did not account for the bit of them that genuinely is a bloke.
More likely Demiboy
- "Sir" from a stranger feels about seventy per cent addressed.
- You are fine with he/him and still hear a wrong note in "he is a good man".
- The fraction roughly holds, and has for years.
More likely Non-Binary
- You tried being fully a man in your head and found it wrong in a different direction rather than right.
- You went looking for the boy part honestly and found nothing there — or the word is mainly there to explain your haircut to colleagues.
- Nothing about you leans. Both, neither, or something with no coordinates at all.
When both words are honestly available
- Ordinary. Non-binary says you are not simply a man or a woman; demiboy adds which way it leans. Many people hold both and use the shorter one in public.
- Some demiboys decline the umbrella and call themselves men with a caveat. That is not a mistake either. Use whatever helps you think clearly, and put it down if it stops helping.
What people get wrong
A demiboy is just a man who is not very masculine.
Masculinity is style. Manhood is a claim. Someone can be enormously masculine and still only partly a man, and a delicate cis bloke can be fully one.
Non-binary means half and half, right in the middle.
Some people are. Plenty are neither, or both at full strength, or something with no coordinates. The middle is one option out of many — and demiboy is not the middle either, it leans.
