Both words describe a partial connection to one gender. Real, steady, and only going so far. The rest is some other gender, or none at all. The difference between them is which gender the fraction is a fraction of: womanhood for a demigirl, manhood for a demiboy. In both, the partial bit is the point, not a stage on the way to the whole thing.
Neither word says anything about what you were assigned at birth. When both words are honestly available
- Honestly, yes. Some people are part girl and part boy at once, with a gap in the middle. Both pages say so plainly.
