Juxera names a gender that runs alongside female rather than inside it. Close enough that 'woman' is the nearest word most people have to offer. Not close enough for it to be accurate.

It comes as a pair. Juxera sits on the female side; proxvir, coined at the same time, sits on the male side of the same idea. Both were built from Latin roots — 'jux' from juxta, near, and 'era', a feminine noun for lady or mistress — by the Tumblr user wulfgendur, who posted a batch of new gender terms in 2014.

Almost nobody uses this word. There are no essays about living with it, no research, no organised community with a history to read. The handful of wiki pages that carry it do not fully agree with each other either — some describe it as 'similar to female but not female', others insist it is a separate gender that merely resembles female from the outside. This page describes what the definition points at, and where that shape might show up in an ordinary life, because that is what there is to work with.

Juxera was coined in 2014 by the Tumblr user wulfgendur, who posted it alongside its male-side counterpart, proxvir, in a batch of new gender-identity terms. The name is built from Latin: 'jux' from juxta, meaning near, and 'era', a feminine noun for lady or mistress. It began, and largely remains, a small MOGAI-coinage term with a thin paper trail; it is documented on wikis such as the MOGAI Wiki and LGBTQIA+ Wiki but has no research, press coverage, or wider community history behind it.

What does juxera actually mean?+

It is usually paired with proxvir, the same idea on the male side. The few pages that document it don't word it identically, so small variations exist.

Is juxera the same as demigirl?+

No, though the two get mixed up. Demigirl is a fraction: partly a girl. Juxera is a whole gender parked next door to girl. If 'partly' is the accurate word for you, demigirl fits better and is used by far more people, which makes it easier to say out loud.

Do I have to change my pronouns or my name?+

No. The word makes no claim on either. People who use it run she/her, they/them, mixed sets, neopronouns, or nothing new at all.

Who coined juxera, and when?+

The Tumblr user wulfgendur, in 2014, alongside proxvir, as part of a post introducing several new gender terms. Beyond that single post, there is very little documented history.

Is juxera a real gender, or just a made-up internet word?+

It was coined online during the 2010s wave of MOGAI microlabels, and a small number of people use it. There's no research behind it and no organised community. What's real is the experience it points at — female-adjacent, not female — which people describe with or without this particular word.

The flag

At least three juxera flag designs circulate (by wulfgendur, by an unknown Tumblr user, and by starqueersolarian), built around pentagon shapes with blue-to-pink gradients and a green triangle pointing toward the 'girl' end. None has settled as the definitive version and stripe hex values are not reliably documented, so no colours are printed here.
