Overview
What ungender means.
Agender is a blank. Ungender is a blank with a direction. The record on the LGBTQIA+ Wiki defines it as feeling not only genderless but as though one's gender is the polar opposite to the concept of gender in general, and places it on the agender spectrum.
The difference from genderless is small in words and large from inside. Genderless: the question does not apply. Ungender: the question applies, and the answer is the negative of it — not zero on the dial, but the dial turned inside out. People reach for it when nothing feels too passive for what they have got.
It is not antigender, which the record flags as a separate word. It is not gendervoid, which is an absence with an ache. And it is not a stance against other people's genders: an ungender person is not saying gender should not exist for anyone, only that for them it is the thing they are the opposite of. The record dates the word to a Tumblr user in June 2014 and the flag to another in September 2018. Small word, no research, no count.
No gender — and the opposite of gender itself. On the agender spectrum.
Ungender in one line
Origin
Where the word comes from
Ungender was coined on 24 June 2014 by the Tumblr user baaphomett, according to the LGBTQIA+ Wiki's record, as part of the same mid-2010s burst of Tumblr gender-identity coining that produced many agender-adjacent microlabels. Its flag followed more than four years later, created on 23 September 2018 by the Tumblr user leptrois; no colour meanings for that flag are recorded, so any explanation of the stripes circulating elsewhere is unverified.

Common experiences
None of these is a test. Most people recognise a few and shrug at the rest.
"No gender" has always felt too polite for what is actually there.
When gender comes up you do not feel absent from the conversation.
You feel like its contradiction.
Agender fitted the facts and missed the force.
You have described yourself as the negative of gender, or the inverse, and watched people nod without following.
Being gendered — any gender — lands not as wrong but as backwards.
You are not against gender for anyone else.
It is just that yours is what gender is not.

Pronouns
Pronouns
They/them is common. Some use it/its on purpose. Some use their name only, which suits a gender defined by negation better than most. Nobody is checking, and keeping the pronouns you were handed does not cancel any of this.
Consider another path
This might not be your word if…
- 1It is simply nothing, no push. Agender or genderless will describe it with fewer questions attached.
- 2The push is political — you want gender gone from everyone's world. That is a view, and genderqueer or plain activism is nearer than a gender identity.
- 3The gap hurts. An absence that aches is gendervoid.
- 4Your gender only feels wrong-way-round when someone misgenders you. That is a reaction to being labelled, not a gender.
Questions people ask
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ungender and agender?+
Agender is having no gender. Ungender, as the wiki defines it, is having no gender and also feeling that your gender is the polar opposite of the concept of gender itself. Both sit on the agender spectrum. If "none" fully describes you, agender is the cheaper word; ungender is for people for whom none is true but not enough.
Is ungender the same as being anti-gender?+
No. The record separates ungender from antigender, and the definition is about one person's own gender, not a position on anyone else's. An ungender person can have gendered friends, partners and children and mind none of it. The opposition is internal: their gender is what gender is not.
Is there an ungender flag?+
Yes. The wiki records one created on 23 September 2018 by a Tumblr user. No colour meanings are recorded, so treat any explanation you see online as someone's guess.
