What unbinary means.
Non-binary says: not a man, not a woman. Unbinary says something sharper: the opposite of both. Not a gap where the binary is not, but a thing that pushes back against it. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki's entry describes it as the antigender of the gender binary — and, in its words, something that can be seen as a multiantigender of man and woman.
Antigender is a family of words for genders felt as the opposite of another gender. Most of them take one target. Unbinary takes both at once. If that reads as abstract, the lived version is simpler. Some people, asked what they are, do not find nothing, and do not find a third thing off to the side. They find a no, with weight behind it, pointed at the whole two-box arrangement.
Honest about the record. This is a very small word. The wiki entry is a few sentences; the coiner is unknown; the flag may have come from a Tumblr blog in 2018. It notes one thing worth passing on: unlike antibinary, which it describes as specific to queer people of colour, unbinary is open to anyone. No research, no numbers, no history. What follows is the shape people describe.

No coiner is on record for unbinary. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki states plainly that the original coiner is unknown, and only tentatively dates the accompanying flag to a 27 June 2018 post by the Tumblr blog Beyond MOGAI Pride Flags — itself hedged as "may have been created by" rather than confirmed. That puts the word's visible history, at best, in the same 2017–2018 wave of Tumblr-coined antigender and abinary terms that produced words like antibinary, without a documented act of naming to point to.

Nothing is implied. They/them is common because it refuses the two-box question in the same breath. Some use it/its or neopronouns for the same reason. Some keep he or she and see no contradiction — the gender is the refusal, the pronoun is admin.

- 1What you find inside is nothing. Calm, blank, no push. That is agender, and it is far better known.
- 2You are a third thing, off to the side, with its own texture. Look at aporagender or maverique.
- 3What you are against is gender roles, not gender itself, and "man" or "woman" still answers the question for you. That is a fight with expectations, and a real one.
- 4You want the sharpest-sounding word rather than the truest. Try "non-binary" in the mirror for a month first.
