What genderfaun means.
Genderfaun means your gender is fluid — it shifts, sometimes over months, sometimes over a morning — with one direction permanently closed. It never goes feminine. Not on a soft day, not on a tired day, not after a haircut.
Everything else is open. A man some weeks. Nothing at all other weeks. Something in between with no name, or a name you had to go looking for. The movement is real. The closed direction is also real, and it is the reason "genderfluid" feels almost right and slightly wrong.
Straight with you about the word: it is young and thinly documented. Genderfaun was coined in 2017 by a DeviantArt user, Shadowofthedude, as the counterpart to genderfae (never masculine, coined around 2014 on the Tumblr blog mogai-archive). What exists is wiki entries, a flag, and people describing themselves online. There is no research and there are no numbers. Anyone quoting you a statistic about genderfaun people is making it up.
You will see it filed under xenogender, including here. That filing is argued about. The name borrows a woodland creature, but the definition is about fluidity with a boundary, not about gender-as-a-forest. Most people who use the word call it a kind of genderfluid.
What follows describes an experience, not a test. If you read it and think "close, but the feminine days do happen for me" — that is useful. Go and read genderfluid.

Genderfaun (sometimes spelled genderfawn) was coined in May 2017 by Tumblr user shadowofthedude as the masculine-excluding-female counterpart to genderfae, itself building on an earlier, looser term, gendermars, documented from a mogai-lexicon Tumblr post on 20 February 2016. Genderfaun describes a genderfluid identity that moves between genders but never includes female or feminine genders.
The genderfaun flag was designed to visually complement the genderfae flag, using warm yellows through blue and purple while deliberately excluding pink and red tones — the mirror of genderfae's exclusion of blue.

None of these is a test. Most people recognise a few and shrug at the rest.
There are days you are a man, days you are nothing at all, days you are something sideways you cannot name — and no days at all on the other side of the map.
You have tested it.
Deliberately. Tried the dress on, sat with the word "she", waited for a day that would make it fit. It did not come, and you tried more than once.
"She" lands wrong in every weather.
On man days it is a slap. On nothing days it is just inaccurate, like the wrong name shouted across a shop. Neither is ever a fit.
You hesitated over "trans man" because of the weeks you are not one, and over "genderfluid" because people then ask about your girl days.
You have a small set of clothes that work most days and a larger set you own and never reach for.
You can tell the difference between "today I feel less masculine" and "today I am feminine", and only the first one happens to you.
Being read as masculine on a nothing day is survivable.
Being read as feminine on any day is a different order of thing.
Your pronoun rotation has cycled through he, they, it, or something you found online. She is not in it, or is in it only as cover.
You have thought: I am making this too complicated.
Then you tried the simpler word and it kept slipping off.
You have never told anyone the full shape of it, because the explanation has two parts and people stop listening after one.
Day to day
What it looks like on a normal Tuesday
Most days start with a small check nobody sees. Before your feet are on the floor you know roughly what today is. Man. Nothing. Something sideways. Sometimes the answer arrives late, around lunch, and the morning was spent guessing.
Then the admin. Which shirt. Whether you bind, pack, put your hair up, do nothing. Whether you are doing the voice today or letting it sit low. None of it is dramatic. It takes four minutes and you have done it ten thousand times.
For the rest of the day nobody knows any of it happened. You are read as one fixed thing by the bus driver, the pharmacist, the colleague who has known you eleven years. The movement is entirely interior. That is the real daily texture — not the shifting, the invisibility of the shifting.
Then around three o'clock someone says "ladies" to your table, or a relative texts and uses the old word. It lands differently depending on the day, and you have no way to explain why Tuesday was fine and this is not.

You are a trans man who has not got there yet.
Some people who use this word do land on "man" eventually. Plenty do not. The days when you are nothing, or something unnamed, are not a waiting room. They are days.
If you are never feminine, you must have a problem with femininity — or with women.
Presentation is not gender. You can wear eyeliner every day of your life, love a long skirt, be soft and gentle, and still never once be a woman. A lot of genderfaun people are femme.
It is genderfluid with extra syllables.
It is genderfluid with a stated boundary, and the boundary is the whole point. It exists so you stop being asked where your girl days went.
You invented the rule to avoid something.
You can be raised as a girl, love women, hold real affection for the spaces you were in, and still find the gender simply never arrives. Nobody picks their range.
It is a made-up Tumblr word, so it does not count.
Every word for gender was made up by someone, most of them recently. Genderfaun has a coining date because it is new, not because it is fake.
If your gender moves, no medical transition can be right for you.
Doctors sometimes say versions of this. It does not follow. Many fluid people transition medically and choose changes that suit the parts of them that hold steady.

The worst day is not a dysphoria day. It is the day you are a man and there is no available way to be seen as one, and you get through the whole thing unseen, and it is a Tuesday, and there is nothing to point at afterwards.
The nothing days have their own problem. Everyone insists on something. Every form, every greeting, every group chat picks a side on your behalf.
There is a 2am version too. Scrolling arguments about whether microlabels are real, deciding your word is too new and too small, deleting it from your bio, putting it back on Thursday.
And the particular loneliness of a gender nobody can observe. It moves and leaves no evidence. Some days you will go looking for the feminine day on purpose, to disprove your own rule. It does not turn up. That is not a nice feeling, but it is information.

There is no genderfaun pronoun set. In practice: he/him, they/them, it/its, neopronouns, or two of those at once. Some people rotate pronouns with the day. Others pick one steady set because asking everyone to track the rotation is exhausting.
She/her is usually out. A few people keep it at work or with family as camouflage, which is a survival choice, not a contradiction. If you use one thing out loud and something else in your head, that counts.
Consider another path
This might not be your word if…
- 1You have had feminine days. Even one. Even years ago, even briefly. That is genderfluid — the exception is the entire content of this word.
- 2Your gender is steady and masculine and it is your presentation that moves, masc some weeks and femme others. That is a man, or a nonbinary person, with a wardrobe.
- 3The closed direction is masculine rather than feminine. Read genderfae.
- 4Nothing shifts at all — you simply are not a woman. Nonbinary, agender, or man will be cleaner than any fluidity word.
- 5You are never feminine because it is unsafe or costly, not because it is absent. That is worth sitting with slowly. It may still be genderfaun. It may be something being pressed flat.
- 6You mainly want a word rarer than the one you already have. That impulse is human and not shameful, but a label picked for its rarity tends to wear out by spring.
- 7You are borrowing it from a genderfluid friend because the near-miss version sounded closer. Take your time. The word will still be there.

Transmasculine or nonbinary man
Umbrella words most genderfaun people can also use, and often do in public. They describe direction rather than movement.
Xenogender
The category genderfaun is usually filed under. A xenogender describes gender through something non-human — an animal, a colour, a season. Genderfaun borrows a faun for its name but not for its definition, which is why the filing gets argued about.

What is the difference between genderfaun and genderfae?+
Same shape, opposite exclusion. Genderfae is fluid but never masculine. Genderfaun is fluid but never feminine. Genderfae came first, around 2014 on Tumblr; genderfaun was coined as its counterpart in 2017. Both take their names from nature spirits, the fae and the faun.
Can I be genderfaun if I wear dresses or makeup?+
Yes. Presentation and gender come apart. There are genderfaun people who are femme every single day in how they look and never feminine in what they are. Some get told they are doing it wrong by strangers online, which tells you about the strangers.
Is genderfaun just genderfluid?+
It is a kind of genderfluid, the way a labrador is a kind of dog. Everyone who is genderfaun could truthfully say genderfluid instead. The narrower word exists so you are not repeatedly explaining the half of the range that is missing.
Is genderfaun a real identity or just a Tumblr microlabel?+
Both, in a way. It is a small, recent, thinly documented word from online communities, with a known coining date and no research behind it. That does not make the experience it points at less real. If the word helps you describe your life to yourself, use it. If it starts feeling like homework, put it down.

Shade variations circulate, so do not worry if a version you have seen sits a little lighter or darker.
