Both words report nothing where other people report something. Agender is the wide one: gender is not applicable, like being asked your favourite opera. The field is blank, and for a lot of people the blank is not a wound. Gendervoid narrows it. The nothing has a shape. You can feel the edges, and sometimes it seems to pull — gendered words go in and do not come back out.
They overlap heavily and many people use both: agender with strangers, gendervoid with themselves. Some people in the community think the second word is unnecessary, and gendervoid people know this. You do not need to win that argument to use whichever word describes you.
How to tell them apart
- Go and look for a gender. If there is simply no place where that answer would be kept, and the looking is unremarkable, that is agender. If you can feel the edges of the space where something should be, that is closer to void.
- Notice what a gendered compliment does. An agender person tends to bin the gendered half and keep the rest. A gendervoid person describes it landing on the floor, sticking to nothing.
- Ask whether "neutral" fits. Some agender people use it happily for themselves. For gendervoid people it is usually too warm a word — "nothing" fits better.
More likely Gendervoid
- The absence is something in itself: a person-shaped hole, a house with one room missing.
- The only positive version of gender feeling you get is relief, when gender stops being mentioned for a while.
- "Non-binary" still suggests you have a gender that is other. You do not have an other.
More likely Agender
- Gender simply does not apply, and its absence is unremarkable. No hole, no edges, nothing to feel.
- You assumed for most of your life that everyone was performing gender and nobody actually felt it, and were genuinely surprised to learn they do.
- You want the wider word that people already recognise, and the void imagery does nothing for you.
When both words are honestly available
- Most gendervoid people can honestly use both. One is the category, the other is the description of how it feels from inside.
- Agender on the form, gendervoid in your head is an ordinary arrangement. Use the one that gets you understood in the room you are standing in.
What people get wrong
Gendervoid is just agender with a dramatic name.
They overlap heavily. The word does a specific job: it names an absence you can feel, rather than one that is simply quiet. You are allowed to use it without winning the argument first.
Feeling nothing is depression talking.
Depression flattens everything, not one slot. Both pages give the same test: is only gender missing, or is everything? A life with feeling in it everywhere except this one slot, steady for years, is the identity — and both can be true at once.
Questions people ask
- Is gendervoid the same as agender?
- They overlap heavily. Agender is the wide word: no gender. Gendervoid is one way of having no gender, where the absence has a shape you can feel and sometimes seems to swallow gendered things aimed at you. Lots of people use agender with strangers and gendervoid with themselves.
- Do I have to pick one of them?
- No. Nobody is keeping a register. If the emptiness is unremarkable to you and the void imagery feels like too much weight, agender or genderless says it more plainly. If you can feel the edges, the narrower word is there. Some people carry both and swap depending on who is asking.
