Genderflux vs Girlflux

Girlflux is genderflux with the anchor named: the same dial, and the gender on it is a girl's.

Genderflux describes a dial rather than a location. The gender itself usually stays the same; what moves is how much of it there is — strong some weeks, faint others, for many people down to nothing. It does not say which gender is doing the moving. Some people always know. Some never do.

Girlflux is what you say when you do know, and the answer is a girl. Fully female some weeks, faintly female others, sometimes gone, while the anchor stays a girl. The stops along the way have names if you want them — paragirl, demigirl, librafeminine, agender at the bottom — and none of them are required reading. Boyflux is the same dial with a boy on it, enbyflux with a non-binary gender. Girlflux is not a different thing from genderflux. It is genderflux with one more piece of information.

How to tell them apart

  • Ask what gets louder. If you can name it — a girl, a woman, femaleness — you are girlflux and can say so. If the thing that gets louder has no fixed name, or you only know that gender rises and falls without knowing whose, stay with genderflux.
  • Notice whether the top of the dial is always the same. Girlflux people describe the full weeks as being entirely a woman, every time. If the full weeks are sometimes one gender and sometimes another, that is fluid as well as flux, and the anchor word will not hold.
  • Try the tighter word in your mouth. Some people find girlflux lands as relief because it finally says which. Some find it claims more than they know. The one that does not overstate is the one to use.

More likely Genderflux

  • It is more likely genderflux — the umbrella — if you know the intensity moves but honestly cannot say which gender is on the dial, or whether it is the same one every time.
  • It is more likely genderflux if the gender that climbs back is non-binary, or unnamed, or not a girl's — the umbrella covers every anchor, including no named anchor at all.
  • It is more likely genderflux if you want the word that needs least explaining in public, and the anchor is a detail for the two or three people who track it.

More likely Girlflux

  • Some weeks woman is the whole truth and you would fight for it. Other weeks it is a word on your driving licence. It is always woman that comes and goes.
  • It is more likely girlflux if you have wondered whether you are agender for about ten days, until the girl climbed back.
  • It is more likely girlflux if being called a girl lands as warmth on a full week and as nothing much on a faint one, and nobody did anything differently.

When both words are honestly available

  • Every girlflux person is genderflux. The umbrella is always true; the narrower word is true when the anchor is known. Many people say genderflux at work and girlflux to the people who will use the information.
  • You can move between the two as your understanding does. Starting with genderflux and finding the anchor later is common, and so is starting with girlflux and deciding the anchor was less fixed than it seemed.

What people get wrong

Girlflux and genderflux are competing labels — you have to pick one.

One sits inside the other. Genderflux says the intensity of your gender moves. Girlflux says which gender: a girl's. Using the precise word does not cancel the umbrella, and using the umbrella does not deny the anchor.

Genderflux means you switch between girl and something else.

No. Flux changes how much, not which. A genderflux person is usually the same thing throughout, at full strength then barely. Switching which gender is genderfluid, and a girl who becomes neutral or agender by turns is closer to girlfluid than to either flux word.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between genderflux and girlflux?
Precision. Genderflux says the intensity of your gender rises and falls, without saying which gender. Girlflux says the gender is a girl's — fully a woman some weeks, faintly one others, sometimes none, always female when present. If you always know it is girlness getting louder and quieter, girlflux is the tighter word. If you do not, genderflux is honest.
Am I girlflux or genderfluid?
Fluid changes which gender; flux changes how much. A genderfluid person may be a girl this week and something else next. A girlflux person is a girl throughout, at full volume then barely, sometimes down to nothing — but never a different gender. If a different gender turns up, look at genderfluid or girlfluid rather than any flux word. Plenty of people are both, and say so.
