Both words describe a gender that does not hold still. That is where the resemblance ends. Genderfluid means the gender itself moves: clearly one thing for a stretch, clearly another the next, sometimes neither and the whole question across the room. Genderflux means the gender mostly stays put and its strength moves — loud some weeks, faint others, for a lot of people right down to nothing.
The old comparison is a radio. Fluid changes the station. Flux turns the dial. Plenty of people do both at once, and some corners of the community file flux under fluid rather than beside it. How to tell them apart
- Ask what you are on a strong day and on a faint day. If the answer is the same word at two different strengths, that is flux. If the answer is a different word, that is fluid.
- Watch the low point. Flux drops towards nothing — a flat, quiet absence where the gender was. Fluid rarely goes blank; it goes somewhere else.
- Look at the wardrobe. A fluid person often owns clothes for several different people. A flux person owns more of the same person, and some weeks cannot be bothered with any of it.
