What soft butch means.
Soft butch is butch turned down a notch, or turned sideways. The masculinity is still load-bearing — the shirts, the stance, the way you are clocked across a room — but it comes without the toughness, or with feminine details mixed in. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki's Butch entry describes a soft butch as a butch who does not act very tough, or is all round a softer type of person, and adds the line this page lives by: that does not make them more feminine or less of a butch than any other butch.
Wikipedia files it with its cousins. Soft butch, stem, futch and chapstick lesbian, its Butch and femme page says, are emerging terms for women who have characteristics of both butch and femme. That is the honest map: a middle ground with several names, drawn by people who got tired of being asked which side they were on.
What it is not: a gender identity. Butch, for some, is a gender in its own right; soft butch is almost always a description of how the butch is carried. It is not quite futch either — futch usually means a real blend that could be read either way, where soft butch keeps the butch and softens it. And it is not a probationary butch waiting to harden up.

Where the word comes from
Soft butch has no single coiner; it grew out of the butch-femme culture of working-class American and British lesbian bars in the mid-20th century, where "butch" and "femme" described a spectrum of masculine and feminine gender presentation and roles among lesbians, well documented from the 1940s and 1950s onward. "Soft" was added later, informally, to mark out butches whose masculinity was partial or blended with feminine traits, as opposed to "stone" butches at the harder end of the same spectrum.
The word "stem" (stud-fem), sometimes used as a synonym, points to the same in-between position from a different angle, blending stud and femme rather than softening butch. As with most of this vocabulary, it was named and refined by the lesbian communities that lived it rather than by any one person or publication.

- 3You want to be a man, read as one everywhere, permanently. Soft butch is not a stop on that road; transmasculine and trans man are the pages.
- 4You want this label because "butch" felt like too much to claim. Butch does not require an audition; the wiki says as much.
