What bigenderfluid means.
Bigender says two genders. Genderfluid says the gender moves. Bigenderfluid — bifluid, on its record — is what you get when both are true at once, and the record allows two shapes of it.
The first: you have two genders, and each of them is fluid on its own. Not girl-and-boy sitting still, but girl-and-something, where the something drifts from androgynous to neutral to faintly masculine while the girl half changes too. The second, simpler shape: your gender is fluid, and it only ever moves between two places.
Say it straight: this is a small word with a thin trail. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki records it being coined more than once — first by an unknown user on or before 5 September 2015, and again independently in 2021 — with several flags, most of them bigender flags blended to show the fluidity. There is no research and there are no numbers. And it is not the same thing as bifluid the sexuality, a separate coinage about attraction that happens to share the name.

Where the word comes from
The LGBTQIA+ Wiki records bigenderfluid (also called bifluid) as having been coined more than once, independently. The earliest trace is an unknown Tumblr user's post on or before 5 September 2015; a second, apparently unconnected coinage of the same term is recorded from 2021. Multiple flags exist from both periods, generally built by blending existing bigender and genderfluid flag designs. No single individual is credited as the originator, and the wiki treats the double coinage as evidence that the same combined concept — two genders, each in motion — arose more than once from the same source words.

Someone asks "so which are you today" and the true answer needs two words and a percentage, so you say "both-ish" instead.
Your photos sort into two people, and then within each pile there are versions that read as slightly different people again.

You have tried to work out which of the two is the real one, and then which version of that one, and given up, because the question has no bottom.

Nothing standard. Some use two sets and switch as the gender switches; some use they/them through everything because it holds; some keep the set they were given and change nothing. If both genders are moving at once, many people find a single fixed set is the only restful thing in the arrangement. Tell the two or three people who will manage it. Give everyone else a default.

- 1Your two genders sit still. Two fixed places is bigender, and the fluid suffix would be describing something that is not happening.
- 2There is one gender and only its volume changes — loud some weeks, faint others. That is genderflux, and the count is one.
- 3You have landed somewhere that was not one of the two, even once. Genderfluid or polyfluid will fit better than a word built on "two".
- 4What you are describing is being attracted to two genders that shift. That is bifluid the sexuality — a different coinage wearing the same name.

Is bigenderfluid the same as genderfluid?+
No, though the overlap is large. Genderfluid has no cap on where the gender goes. Bigenderfluid says there are two, and either each of the two moves, or the movement runs only between them. If the number two is not doing any work for you, genderfluid is the cleaner word.
Bifluid or bigenderfluid — which is right?+
Both appear on the record for the gender. Bifluid is shorter and older; bigenderfluid is unambiguous, because bifluid is also the name of a separate sexuality term about attraction. If you use bifluid, expect to explain which one you mean.
Is this a real identity or a mash-up?+
It is a mash-up, in the plain sense that it combines two existing words, and its record says so. Whether it is real is not a question a wiki can answer. It describes an experience some people have and could not name with either word alone. If it is your experience, that is the whole test there is.
