Non-binary is a location word. It covers everyone whose gender isn't reached by man or woman, and it says nothing about direction of travel, assignment at birth, or what you want done about any of it. Plenty of non-binary people are one fixed thing that simply isn't either.
Transfeminine is a direction word. It describes people assigned male at birth whose gender runs feminine — towards womanhood, or towards femininity without womanhood, or towards something with no clean name yet. Trans women sit under it. So do demigirls and femme-leaning non-binary people. It is honest without being precise: it says which way you are facing without demanding you finish the sentence tonight. The two often describe the same person from different angles.
How to tell them apart
- Ask which way you face. Transfeminine points steadily one way, even when nothing is being done about it. Non-binary makes no claim about direction; if there is no lean, transfeminine adds nothing.
- Ask what you were assigned. Most people use transfeminine to mean assigned male at birth. Non-binary says nothing about assignment at all.
- Ask whether "woman" is in play. Transfeminine leaves it open that woman might be the word at the end of the sentence. If the honest answer is neither — not man, not woman, no pull either way — non-binary is the fuller description.

Transfeminine is just a polite way of saying trans woman, so it can't be non-binary.
Some people do use it that way. Many use it precisely because "woman" is not the word they mean, and being folded in feels wrong in the other direction. The umbrella holds non-binary people on purpose.
Non-binary people don't transition; transfeminine people do.
Neither word requires or forbids hormones or surgery. Some non-binary people want a specific short list. Some transfeminine people want a voice, a name and nothing else. Wanting less is not wanting it less.
