Umbrella and specific. Non-binary covers everyone whose gender is not man or woman: both, neither, partly, something unnamed. Demigender picks out one shape under it: partly one gender, and the remainder is not a second gender. It is blank.
Most people who use one use both, choosing whichever the room can handle. The question here is whether the precision buys you anything, or whether "not a man, not a woman" already says everything true about you.
How to tell them apart
- Say "about seventy per cent" and see whether it lands. If a proportion feels truer than a category, demigender. If there is no particular share of woman or man to name, plain non-binary.
- Notice which word feels thin. If being called non-binary is accurate and slightly thin, because it drops the part that is actually there, demigender. If demigirl or demiboy feels like an overstatement, non-binary.
- Ask where the pull is. Demigender: never towards the other side; you simply do not fully occupy the space you are in. Non-binary: away from both, or towards a third thing, or nowhere in particular.
More likely Demigender
- "Woman" or "man" is a word you would defend if someone tried to take it off you, and one you would never offer as the complete story.
- You corrected someone's "she" and then felt like a fraud, because she was not wrong. Just not finished.
- You tried agender on in your head once. Too empty. Nothing is the wrong amount.

- You tried being fully a man and fully a woman in your head and found both wrong in a different direction, not partly right.
- You have no picture of how you want to look, and a very clear list of how you do not.
- You want a word the dentist already knows, with no clause after it.
When both words are honestly available
- Demigender sits under non-binary, so both are honestly available to almost everyone who uses the narrower word. Non-binary in public, demigirl or demiboy in private, is the standard arrangement.
- Whether demigender counts as non-binary, or as trans, is contested by demigender people themselves. Some think of themselves as women or men with a caveat and claim neither umbrella. Both positions are current.
