How to tell them apart
- Take the clothes out of the question. If you could wear anything you liked, all the time, and still be a man — and that would settle it — you are describing crossdressing. If the clothes are the least of it and what you want is to be read, named and lived with as a woman, that is a transition question.
- Try the button. Someone offers a hypothetical: it changes your body overnight, no cost, nobody remembers you differently. A crossdresser tends to hesitate, or decline — he wanted the skirt, not the change. Many trans women answer before the sentence is finished, and have had the answer for years. Some hesitate too — over the people, or the years already spent getting here — and a hesitation is not a verdict.
- Notice what happens when the dressing stops. For a crossdresser, the man is intact between dressings; the outfit comes off and nothing is missing. For a trans woman, the woman does not come off. If anything, the days without her are the ones that cost.

- The two words are not enemies. Some people are honestly unsure which one fits and spend a while in between, dressing and watching what it does to them. Giving it a year of noticing is allowed, and the words will both still be there.
