This is a parent and a child, not two rivals. Bigender covers two whole genders whether they arrive one at a time or both switched on. Ambigender narrows to the second case only: both, always, stacked.
An honest note on size. Bigender is the room with the people, the writing and the flags in it. Ambigender is a small word: you will find definitions and barely find anyone living under it. The narrower word only earns its keep when the constant, no-switching part is the thing people keep getting wrong about you.
How to tell them apart
- Check when you wake up. Bigender with switching: you already know which one you are today, like a weather report. Ambigender: there is no check to do. Both are already there, and the day does not open with a question.
- Someone asks "so which are you today?" If you can answer, even reluctantly, that is bigender. If the question is built wrong and you have to dismantle it before replying, that is ambigender.
- Track it for a fortnight. A single honest "today I'm mostly..." rules ambigender out.
More likely Bigender
- Sir lands correctly on Tuesday and like a slap on Thursday, and nothing about your body changed in between.
- You have two photos of yourself and thought: that is two different people, and both are me.
- There is a rhythm to it, even an irregular one. Weeks apart, hours apart, no fixed schedule.
More likely Ambigender
- Sir does not sting and ma'am does not sting. What stings is that whichever one lands, the other half of you has just been deleted.
- You read the genderfluid page and the timing never matched. You were waiting for a change that has never once arrived.
- On any ordinary Tuesday two very different outfits are both correct. Not one for weekends. Both, now.
When both words are honestly available
- Always both, in one direction. Ambigender is a subset of bigender, so an ambigender person can say bigender without losing anything, and most do.
- A bigender person whose two are switched on at once, so that nothing anyone calls them is ever more than half right, is living the ambigender shape whether or not they have met the word.
What people get wrong
Ambigender is genderfluid with two settings.
Fluid means it moves. Ambigender does not move. That is the entire distinction, and it is the one people get wrong most. Bigender can include movement between its two; ambigender cannot.
Two at once means half a man and half a woman.
Not halves. Two whole things stacked in one person. Halving is what other people do to you when they pick one. And the two need not be man and woman at all; either or both can be non-binary.

A minority of sources use ambigender to mean an ambiguous or shifting gender, close to the opposite sense, so if you meet someone using it that way they are on an older, looser reading rather than getting it wrong.
